PRESS RELEASE
2008 Hamilton Music Awards to air on Cable 14, Cogeco Burlington and Cogeco Niagara
HAMILTON: September Seventh Entertainment is pleased to announce that the 2008 Hamilton Music Awards will be broadcast on Cable 14, Cogeco Burlington and Cogeco Niagara beginning this Saturday April 25 at 7PM (please see a complete schedule below). Actor Patrick McKenna and musician Tom Wilson host the star-studded show which comes to viewers from the Studio at Hamilton Place. The show features live performances, award presentations and special tributes to ArcelorMittal Dofasco Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Teenage Head and Bill Powell.
Teenage Head was formed in 1975 while members were attending Westdale high school. The band went on to become one of the most influential punk bands in history. Some of Teenage Head’s biggest hits include Let’
s Shake, Top Down, Teenage Beer Drinkin’ Party, Disgusteen, Picture My Face, Somethin’ On My Mind and Some Kinda Fun. Teenage Head also gained notoriety when their concert at the Ontario Place Forum on June 2, 1980 became the scene of a riot. Fans, that couldn’t get into the sold out show, overturned police cars and swam to the venue which is built over the water of Lake Ontario.
Often referred to as the Canadian Ramones, it was no surprise when the three original members of the Teenage Head hooked up with Marc Bell - otherwise known as Marky Ramone – to offer a new take on 12 classic Teenage Head songs. The 2008 Sonic Unyon release of Teenage Head with Marky Ramone received critical acclaim and accolades from fans around the world and caps off three decades of rock and roll at its finest.
Sadly on October 16th, lead singer Frankie Venom passed away after a short but courageous battle with throat cancer. Although Frankie was not able to join the rest of his band to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award, remaining members Gord Lewis, Steve Mahon, Jack Pedler accepted the award on behalf of Frank and performed in his honour with the help of a few friends singing lead vocals.
Additional musical performers during the broadcast of the 2008 Hamilton Music Awards include notable Hamilton stars Brian Melo, Shawn Brush, Young Rival, John Ellison, Danny Lockwood, Derek Miller, Rita Chiarelli, Evelyn Dicks, Queen Cee and Steve Strongman.
Bill Powell started out as a painter and sculptor in the late fifties.
Shortly after his start as an artist, Powell began promoting street art shows and concerts. He opened up the Ebony Knight Coffeehouse which hosted musical, literary and experimental art performances. By 1975, he began the annual weekend long summer music celebration in Gage Park - The Festival of Friends. He ran the internationally recognized festival for a quarter century. Powell was also responsible for spearheading Earthsong Festival at Princess Point. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including Citizen of the Year. Powell remains active in the arts community to this day with The Studio Gallery.
The 2008 Hamilton Music Awards featured 143 nominations in 32 categories.
